Even after his death, Steve Jobs topped the CEO ranking. Jobs is followed by Amazon head Jeff Bezos with former Samsung head Yun Jon-Yong in third place.

The global list is compiled and ranked by Insead for Harvard Business Review. It surveyed more than 3,100 chief executive officers and based the rankings on market value change and returns. It also analyzed the CEO performances between 1995 and August 2012 and what is the total shareholder returns during the time that the CEO was in charge.

University of California Berkeley management professor Morten Hansen said Steve Jobs is the best-performing CEO in the last 17 years. Apple’s market value has increased significantly by US$359 billion from 1997 to 2011. Shareholder return also averaged an annual growth of some 35 percent.

Meg Whitman, who now heads Hewlett Packard, is the highest-ranking female in the list. She came in at ninth place, thanks to her time in eBay.
