Qantas Cuts 500 Jobs

Qantas has announced that it is axing some 500 jobs in its Sydney and Victoria operations. These jobs would come from the engineering section as the airline tries to step up its integration and consolidation of maintaining two bases into one.

Qantas would also cut an additional 200 jobs from the line-maintenance roles of the airline’s jet base in Sydney Airport. The rest of the job cuts would be from Avalon Airport.

The struggling airline said the job cuts are being implemented because of an oversupply of maintenance engineers, who take care of the day-to-day servicing of Qantas aircrafts.

Qantas is believed to be reducing workforce from its Qantas Defence Services. This is the facility that maintains its C130 Hercules aircraft. The airline will also consolidate its bits engineering training facilities and moving it from Melbourne to Sydney.

Since it started axing jobs this year, Qantas has cut off more than 1,200 jobs from its engineering operations. This has been bad news for Victoria as its manufacturing industries continue to suffer.

Last August, Qantas closed down its Melbourne’s heavy maintenance base where some 422 jobs were axed.
