Microsoft Slashes CEO’s Bonus
As Microsoft struggles, chief executive Steve Ballmer received a much lower bonus. Windows’ sales have flattened as Microsoft continues to struggle in promoting the software to European customers.
Ballmer became chief executive officer in 2000 when Microsoft founder Bill Gates stepped down to concentrate on his humanitarian efforts.
Ballmer received about US$620,000 in bonuses for the 2012 fiscal year. According to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the figure is about nine percent lower from the previous year. His salary also stays the same at US$685,000.
This is the third consecutive year that the Microsoft CEO did not receive his maximum bonus. It’s not a mystery, though. Microsoft continues to struggle in the intense technology field. The company also declared a US$6.2 billion write-down because of a failed acquisition deal.
Windows also suffered from lower profits as consumers shift from computers to tablets and mobiles.
When Microsoft filed its papers to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the company’s compensation committee indicated that the company took into account the decline in Window’s sales. It also included Windows division’s failure to have a browser choice screen for some Windows PC in Europe.
Many consider this a setback because it was required by Microsoft’s commitment with the European Commission.
