Topshop Opens in Sydney
British high-street brand Topshop opens today and Aussies will flock to its George Street branch to see what it has to offer. The opening of Topshop follows other fashion brands like Forever 21 and Zara.
According to Topshop and Topman Australia chairman Hilton Seskin, the George Street branch boasts of over four floors of 1,800 square meters of space. Seskin said the Australia launch is by far the company’s most ambitious project. Topshop’s flagship store is impressive with neon signage and floor-to-window ceilings.
The Sydney store would also employ close to 300 staff.
Topshop was established in 1964. Since then, it has become one of the most sought-after fashion brands. The brand has over 400 stores worldwide. Around 200,000 shoppers visit its UK flagship store each week and the company has high expectations for its Sydney operations.
What made Topshop successful is its ability manufacture fashionable clothes in a reasonable time. Traditionally, fashion brands make clothes months in advance. Topshop clothes are shipped worldwide from a central warehouse.
Seskin said that Topshop would have an additional 40 security guards to help manage the store’s opening. Breakfast packs were also prepared for Aussies who lined up overnight to be the first to enter the store.
Seskin said about 30,000 shoppers are expected to visit the store today.
And although Aussie consumers are still holding tightly to their wallets, Seskin said the reasonable prices of Topshop clothes would be more than enough to entice consumers. A black blazer costs about $20 while a shirt can go as low as $30.
