Italian Miners Barricade Themselves Underground

August 30, 2012 by Triinu Maran in Uncategorized with 0 Comments

As a protest to the government’s decision to close the pit, more than 100 miners barricaded themselves 400 meters underground, according to Reuters.

Carbosulcise, Italy’s only coal mine has had issues with productiveness. Government has a meeting ahead this week to discuss the pit’s future, but few days ago miners took drastic measures to help keep the mine going, they hold 350 kilograms of ammunition and say they’ll stay there until their jobs are secured. One of the miners has slashed his wrist in a live TV address, according to recent news by Dailymotion.

To prevent closing it down altogether, miners have previously suggested to diverse the mine into a combined mining and carbon capture site. Carbon capture is a relatively new concept, but is basically the storing of polluting emissions underground to mitigate global warming.

Carbosulcise workers have a history of protesting in such manner, in 1984, 1993 and 1995 miners didn’t come on the ground for 100 days.
