Samsung Is Now King Of Mobile Phones
Nokia is no longer the kind of mobile phones, a spot the company enjoyed in the last 14 years. According to a Reuters’ poll, Samsung has dislodged Nokia’s reign in the global mobile phone market.
According to Reuters analysts, Samsung may have sold 88 million mobile phones in the first quarter of 2012. In the same period, Nokia sold 83 million from January to March 2012.
Nokia released its official numbers last Wednesday while Samsung is scheduled to release the data end of April.
CCS Insight research head Ben Woods said that Samsung taking over the number one spot will be a major blow to Nokia’s reign. The news, on the other hand, will be celebrated by Samsung. CCS Insight is a global market research firm.
Nokia has dominated the mobile phone market for many years. In 1998, it dislodged Motorola as the top mobile phone company in the world. For several years, Nokia enjoyed a 40-percent market share.
It, however, began facing tough challenges when smart phones from competitors proved to be more technologically advanced. In 2007, tech giant Apple launched its first iPhone and signaled the start of the smartphone craze.
Nokia then rebranded its position by catering to the lower market.
Samsung has entered the phone market in 1998. The South Korean multinational company has several subsidiaries including Samsung Heavy Industries (shipbuilding), Samsung Electronics (IT company), Cheil Worldwide (advertising agency), Samsung Life Insurance, Samsung Everland (theme park in South Korea), among others.
Samsung has also entered the tablet PC market with its Galaxy Tab series, which is directly competing with Apple’s iPad.
