Australia Supermarkets Rivals World’s Largest

January 17, 2013 by rochelle in Business with 0 Comments

Australia’s supermarkets are battling it out with the world’s largest supermarkets.  Wesfarmers and Woolworths have made it into the top 20 in the 2013 Global Powers of Retailing.

Wesfarmers is in the 18th spot after climbing three notches while Woolworths is at 17th place, a notch higher than its fiercest rival.

2013 Global powers of Retailing is a report done by accounting firm Deloitte.

Wesfarmers and Woolworths have combined revenue of $47 billion for their Australia and New Zealand operations. This is a considerable feat because many of the supermarket chains in the top 20 have businesses in at least 10 countries.

Walmart is ranked first with revenue of US$447 billion (or $424 billion). French chain store Carrefour is at a distant second with US$113 billion.

It is worthy to note that despite the challenging economic conditions, most of the retailers posted growth in their retail revenue. In Australia, Deloitte said strongest retail conditions would occur in mining regions like Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria would be weakest.
