Qantas Assures Jobs
In the midst of a pending partnership between airlines Emirates and Qantas, Alan Joyce assured employees that their jobs would not be cut. Joyce is the chief executive officer of Qantas.
The chief executive tried to assure the workers, saying the alliance between the two airlines is meant to grow Qantas’ international business. Some quarters in Qantas are worried that the partnership may include cutting on jobs.
Joyce said that that there would be no cuts as a result of Emirates-Qantas deal. He added that the partnership would equate to having more jobs because the deal intends the further grow the business.
Joyce also said that if the partnership with Emirates does not push through, the international operation would not be viable. This can lead to more job losses and hurt other areas of the business like frequent flyer.
Appearing before the press in Canberra, Joyce said that the partnership would push through and that there is no turning back. He added that Emirates would help expand operations in Europe to help Qantas grow.
This is not the first time that Qantas entered into an agreement with other airlines. It had partnerships with Air France, Cathay Pacific, and British Airways.
The Transport Workers Union, however, continue to see the partnership with reluctance. TWU said that Joyce’s pronouncements sound hollow. The union also said Qantas is implementing an aggressive policy to outsource and offshore many Qantas group jobs.
Transport Workers Union represents the ground staff of Qantas.
