Oakeshott Angry Over Thomson Controversy
The ‘merits of the issue’ is what independent MP Rob Oakeshott said will be his main focus as the Parliament proceeds with the investigation of former MP Craig Thomson. The latter is being accused of misusing funds of the Health Services Union (HSU) while in office from 2002 to 2007.
The former MP allegedly used close to $500,000 from the member funds. The money was allegedly used for cash withdrawals and to pay for escort services, electioneering and lavish meals.
In an interview, Oakeshott said that the numbers do not bother him even if this means it will cost the Gillard government some votes.
He admits, however, that he is angry at these accusations, especially since it puts the burden on the members of the Parliament. The MP said public officials should set standards on ethical and moral behavior. He added that if these standards are breached, then parliamentary colleagues should be able to form a sound judgment.
Oakeshott has once advised Thomson to explain himself to the house. Thomson, however, continues to deny the charges against him. The former MP also stood up at Parliament early this week to say that he will give his full explanation in due time.
The independent MP is not alone in his concern. Fellow independent Tony Windsor has also expressed dissatisfaction about the issues raised against the head of the HSU. He has also cautioned the public not to make judgments, saying he is waiting to hear what Thomson has to say.
Frustrations expressed by Oakeshott and Windsor are seen as threats to the current government as Prime Minister Julia Gillard relies on their support.
