Anti-Virus Can Only Do So Much

April 5, 2012 by rochelle in Tech

Despite the regular updates provided by anti-virus software companies, the reality is they can’t keep up with the incessant onslaught of hackers.

AV-TEST chief executive officer Andreas Marx said that as many as 55,000 malware samples are seen every single day. AV-TEST is a German security test lab that evaluates how effective anti-virus products are. These products are tested against AV-TEST’s threats database.

Because of the sheer volume of malware samples that appear, it’s quite impractical for anti-virus software companies to keep issuing anti-virus updates. Marx said that the malware count is now at 80 million.

This development poses serious concerns not just to individuals but to companies, as well. Banks, online stores, and other websites that deal with transactions are regularly under threat of virus attacks. Even those with the most sophisticated systems may be vulnerable to attacks.

The attacks are also not done by individuals who have too much time in their hands. AV-TEST said these are often backed by well-funded organizations.

Security and risk consult Charles Wale warned the public to exercise caution when dealing with machines like ATM and online banking sites as these are the primary target of hackers. The focus is to get personal information and steal identities.

Despite the shortcomings of anti-virus software companies, it is still better to purchase anti-virus for your computers. Corporations are also encouraged to beef up their IT systems by purchasing the most advanced anti-virus software and have IT people who regularly update themselves with updates in the tech world.
