Law Student Gaoled for Racist Tweets
After posting offensive Twitter comments addressed against Fabrice Muamba, a 21-year old college student from the UK was sentenced to prison on grounds that he had disrupted public order for his racial ranting. Muamba is an EPL soccer star playing for the Bolton’s.
The Swansea Magistrates’ Court gave Liam Stacey 56 days of prison time, following his own admission of posting racial comments on his Twitter account. The incident happened while he was watching a televised game of the FA Cup Quarter Finals, where Muamba collapsed on the field.
The incident took place last March 17.
Stacey specifically tweeted, “LOL. F*** Muamba. He’s dead!!! #haha.” This caused other fans on the social media site to react angrily at him. He further aggravated the fans of the game by posting more offensive comments, this time directed to some Twitter users.
With the increasing online backlash against Stacey, Stacey attempted to pacify the hatred, later claiming that his account was hacked and that he had no access to his mobile when these comments were posted. He also tweeted his apologies, saying the incident was one big misunderstanding and that he does not condone what’s been said on Twitter.
Meanwhile, Muamba is said to be slowly recovering in his bed at the London Chest Hospital after the incident. The soccer player was initially brought to the intensive care unit after his collapse.
Doctors determined that he suffered from cardiac arrest, but assures the public he is now in stable condition and has been sitting up and watching television while recuperating.
