Former Prostitute Denies Encounter with Thomson
A woman recanted her initial claim that she slept with Craig Thomson. She apologized for her initial assertion, saying it was a case of ‘mistaken identity.’
The unnamed woman initially surfaced via an interview on Nine Network’s A Current Affair where she said she had sex with the Labor MP. The former prostitute claimed that Thomson paid her to have a sexual encounter in May 2005.
She recanted her story, however, during an interview on Seven Network’s Today Tonight. She added that she was overseas during that time, which made it impossible for anything to have happened.
Thomson has figured in a string of controversies during his term as Health Services Union head. He was accused of financial misconduct, allegedly illegally spending $500,000 of the union’s money. The amount was believed to have been spent on spousal trips, soliciting the services of prostitutes, and funding his campaign in the 2007 federal election.
The former prostitute apologized to Thomson and called out the Channel 9 program for pursuing the story despite her no longer being a credible witness.
When asked why she made the claim that she had sex with the former HSU head, the woman said she believed that she had at that time. She added that she had several clients who fitted Thomson’s description.
She, however, said that the incident couldn’t have happen since her travel records showed that she was not in Australia during that time. She reiterated that it was simply a case of mistaken identity and that Thomson should not be punished for a false claim.
