Air of Certainty In Business As Election Date Is Set

The business sector has welcomed the announcement by the Prime Minister of Australia, Mr. Kevin Rudd, regarding the coming elections. Mr. Rudd has announced that it will be set for Sept. 7, or roughly less than five weeks.

Following the announcement, businessmen has called for political parties to help boost the economy of the country, saying that the coming polls should result in a “clear-cut winner” who can lead the country amidst all the challenges.

Bernie Brookes, the chief executive at Myer said, “I think it’s going to be good that at least now we can get what I would call the politics out of the way and concentrate on the policy that Australia needs.”

“One thing you’d hope for is that there is a majority one way or the other, so that we get good clean government that can create good policy and solve some of the issues that we’re facing at the moment.”

Robert Millner, who chairs the Washington H. Soul Pattinson and Brickworks, expressed confidence that with the date of certainty, Australia can push forward. “Talking around the traps to various business people, you know people outside are hurting. I don’t think the politicians understand that,” he said.

Consumer and business confidence has been failing in the last few months, with the economy underperforming. Many sectors blame this on a minority government.

The business community also noted that several policies have to be reviewed and looked into, especially after the elections. Issues like economic management, carbon tax law, workplace relations, paternal leaves and broadband network have to be addressed, too.

“Business will be looking to the major parties to offer policies and strategies focused on creating a vibrant and sustainable economy for the decades to come,” says Innes Willox from the Australian Industry Group.
