Russell Brand Creates Stir in UK Parliament
Whatever venue and occasion it may be, expect British comedian Russell Brand to create a stir. Brand appeared at a committee hearing yesterday to share his experience with battling drug abuse.
The 36-year-old actor appeared before the Home Affairs Select Committee sporting a beard and long hair. He also wore gold chains and crosses, a ripped black vest and black hat. The committee was reviewing the government’s drug policy.
Brand said the public should exercise more love and compassion to those who are battling drug addiction. He argued that drug addiction should be treated like a disease and not a criminal act. He said his drug problems were because of psychological and emotional difficulties.
Brand also said that the legalities of anti-drug policies are irrelevant to drug addicts. An arrest does not deter an addict because if he needs drugs, he would move heaven and earth to get it.
The comedian has always been open with drug problems, writing two autobiographies. For years, he has tried to overcome his heroin and alcohol addiction. As a consequence, he was arrested at least 12 times.
Through the help of his agent John Noel, Brand has abstained from drug use since 2002. He supports Focus 12, an addiction charity, and regularly attends Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholic Anonymous meetings.
Brand said addiction is a serious issue and an addict is most likely to end up in jail or a mental institution. Worse, an addict may die because of his actions. He also aired his sentiments when British singer Amy Winehouse died because of addiction.
